That's such a subjective question that it's hardly fair to ask it. I don't live in Albany, but I've been there a few times. I don't personally like all the tall, crowded buildings and the seemingly endless elevated roadways, and the Empire State Plaza (aka 'the Egg') looks a bit like a spaceship plunked down in the middle of the city. However, I've enjoyed theatrical performances there, so it's not all bad. I'm sure there are as many people who like Albany as there are people who don't.
Why not go to the City's website, check out what's available for shopping, entertainment, or whatever else interests you, then plan a visit. That way, you can judge for yourself.

I grew up in the Albany metro - the "Capital District" - and I have to admit Albany's pretty bland. I wouldn't say it sucks, but it's no Nashville, TN, let alone Boston or NYC, both of which Albany is at most 3 hours from (so you can't really say it's in the middle of nowhere). And Wikipedia's listing Albany as the "most average city in America" was news to me when I first read it, but knowing the culture there it really doesn't surprise me one bit.
However, two things: 1 for those who want a city with history, be it the kind you can see in museums or what you see walking its streets, Albany is a real gem, just like any Northeastern city; and 2 at this point real estate is still a relative bargain. Manhattanites have started to buy up all the nice properties in the Hudson River Valley, and have just recently (past 5 years) started to leave an impresion on the Albany market. It's only a matter of time before the New York Times will declare it "little Manhattan" or something to that effect, so I would recommend investing in real estate here.. it would be a very good, safe bet.

My son lives there, and he agrees. He can't find anyone his age - he's a professional in his early thirties - to date. I've been there, and I have to agree also - it's pretty dull. Ya wanna excitement, move to Boston!
