I am a Yahoo answers neophyte, but immediately I observed that the people here generally can't spell. Germany was spelled GERMENY and engine was spelled INGINE. I am normally not that intractable about spelling, but come on people. LOOK AT THE TOP RIGHT HAND CORNER OF THE "ENTER YOUR QUESTION BOX"...there's a spell chek opsion (irony intended).

Some people can still spell, but since the 1970s there has been a trend away from correcting children's spelling. Spelling is also no longer taught by rote. I went to school in the 1960s, ergo - I can spell.

Oh how I agree! It's extremely frustrating. I just saw the movie Idiocracy and it kind of scared me because it seems to be really happening. I notice it's an even bigger problem online. What I find ironic is that people who can barely spell or use proper English grammar are among the first to complain of foreigners' bad English.

I know!! I don't know why it bothers me so much, but I cannot stand bad grammar!!! These people need to be more concerned about their grammar and spelling than whatever question they're asking or answering!

Spell Check and Grammar Check, themselves, are the problem.
Way, way, way, way, way too many people rely on them and when it doesn't catch things like "to" when you meant to write "too" then you go ahead and send things and look like an idiot!
Just my opinion...but I was beat over the head with spelling and grammar exams in school. I don't think they allow that anymore. Thanks for letting me vent!
