You may have a gooseberry bush. The gooseberry leaves look exactly like currants. The berry produced is usually a green, slightly hairy fruit but often this fruit is purple as well. I have a lot of these plants in the understory of the woods on my property.

It sounds as though the plant at question is a shrub, as similar leaves will usually follow the same family. Perhaps it is a 'Black' Currant.

Perhaps a type of ribes (currant) there are many varieties or viburnum.
