A band is only as good as it's weakest link.every instrument is equally important.Music is a 100% cooperative effort. The closer the cooperation and coordination the better the music. If there is one instrument that is less important to the song,it does not belong in the song.

Well, that depends.
If you're wanting an actual musician's band, then it's all about equal.
If you have someone who's a freakin' prodege, like Randy Rhoads, Jimi Hendrix, or Buckethead, then it's all guitar. Same way with vocals, or anything else.
For a new age band, unfortuanately, the only thing that's there at all is vocals.
For a good old American rock band, it's drums and bass all the way, keepin' the rhythm steady.
It all depends on the skill level of the musicians, or the type of music being played, really.

#1. Vocals- if there's a bad singer, I won't listen to it.
#2. Guitar(s)- Incredibly important for hooks, grooves and riffs, I can tell when a bad has a crappy guitar player.
#3. Drums- Gotta have a good beat.
#4. Bass guitar- enhances the drum sound, good bassists are kind of hard to distinguish, but they are important.
#5. Keyboard- not as important, could do without, but a bonus when done well.
#6 on down is anything you could do without.

Bass and/or drums #1 as they set the tempo that keeps everyone else in line
Guitar adds flare to the beat thats established, tells the musical story.
Vocals are last after any other instrument is added. The vocals are for those that don't speak "music". Vocals are like subtitles for foreign films.

Allow me some artistic license here. The band i am in, #1 would be vocals as we do many acapella numbers. Next i would say rhythm guitar or autoharp for foundation. Next, mandolin or dulcimer for melody or backup. Next, banjo for backup. Finally, fiddle for occassional punctuation. That all depends upon the song though. Some songs are fiddle songs and then the fiddle reigns. Some are mandolin songs and it is tops. The bohdran (celtic drum) and the bass (upright or guitar) are ICING. And what mighty fine icing they are! You can check us out if you would like. Thanks for allowing me the artistic license! ;)
