Most fads of any era are just that, fads that for some strange reason became popular. Some aspects of fashion represented the growing rejection of what were traditional American values. Long hair on men and women, beards and mustaches all became vogue often because they were 180 degrees from the crew cut and clean shaven looks of the 50's and early 60's. The smaller foreign cars that became the fads of the late 70's did so because of the rising price of oil (sounds familiar). The "Afro" hair style among African Americans represented an aspect of the "black is beautiful" movement wherein they no longer felt that they needed to look like whites. Concern about the environment prompted changes in culture. The first earth day was celebrated in the 70's. The woman's rights movement prompted "bra burning", the anti Vietnam war movement prompted draft card burning. Music reflected the various aspects of unrest in the 70's. The assassinations of Bobby Kennedy and Dr. King created an anger and doubt which was reflected in music, literature and even television. There are so many "causes" and connections that you could go on forever.

I Lived during the seventies and people of that time, were into peace and freedom and expressing ourselves in anyway we felt comfortable. Our dress reflected our thoughts and feelings. It was a "Groovy" time.
