A baby's body has about 300 bones at birth. These eventually fuse (grow together) to form the 206 bones that adults have. This makes vaginal birth possible because if all the bones were fused and solid (many start out as just cartilage and later turn to bone) it would too traumatic to squeeze out the birth canal. The skull is the most noticeable example of this. That is why most VB babies have "cone heads."

synarthroses-not movable such as in the skull, amphiarthroses- slightly movable like ribs, diarthrosis- movable ones such as ball and socket. here's more info on joints http://www.mnsu.edu/emuseum/biology/humananatomy/skeletal/joints.html

that's actually an interesting question.. in some places they have more bones, like in the tail bone, adults bones have fused together while a baby has the actual bones to make up the tail bone but they have not fused to make one bone.. in the nose adults have bones, babies do not grow bones in the nose until around the age of 2.

More, I thought. Several bones of the skull are distinct structures that eventually fuse together, but are separate pieces at birth. It makes the birthing process easier, I've heard.
