Are black Raspberries the same fruit as blackberries?

No they are the same family though. Raspberries are much sweeter and better. The briar looks different too. Blackberries briar is green and Raspberry is almost red.

Black Raspberries are similar in flavor to regular raspberries but tend to be sweeter. Black raspberries are also notorious in the culinary community for holding up much better in the freezer and are far less seedy than raspberries (which results in a better jam and can be used in sauces without having to necessarily be strained). The problem is if you live in the south you have a much smaller chance of finding them fresh.

If you are looking for an alternative for blackberries you can try its very close cousin (you might even say its a sibling) the dewberry. These look like giant blackberries and are super sweet. They make a great cobbler or pie. They tend to have pretty hard seeds so you might want to avoid them for jams (although if you don't mind the seeds you will be in for a treat).

I'm from Texas, and the dewberries we have here are second to no blackberry, or raspberry for that matter.

Raspberries and Blackberries are different varieties that come from the same genus of Rubus. Read below.

Blackberry - "Rubus spp."
Red Raspberry - R. idaeus L. (European) and R. strigosus (North American).

Black Raspberry - R. occidentalis L. or R. strigosus, further to the south.

Blackberries have a course brown stem. Raspberries have smooth purple stems Minus the thorns.

There is black & red raspberries though.

Just to add this in there is a berry called a dew berry that looks like the blackberry that runs on the ground & has a green stem.
