If it would just affect me then I would let everyone in my area know but I have grown children with families and a husband who would suffer greatly from the majority fundys in this area. Actual violence has been know to happen to people like myself and my family in the not too distant past here. While the majority of the local police force made up of the most radical fanatical fundies in the area, no crimes would be investigated if a hint of witchcraft was what the criminals were after. If fact it wouldn't be out of the question to suspect the police themselves for the crime. Destruction of property, vandalism and arson would be the norm for a "witch" in this area. While murder hasn't happened, it can be said that the "witches" got the hint when their property was completely destroyed that they should leave the area. So no one died in the last 25 years. Before that I believe that a couple did lose their lives. So myself and others like me stay deeply in the closet and there are others like me here. We protect each other the best we can, never meet together to do a ritual or openly discuss what we are. I hope this answers your question. Blessed Be.

My personal opinion on whether or not to let others know I am practicing witchcraft, or coming out of the broom closet is a good one, for one!!! I am very proud of being a witch, it is a gift I treasure and I feel that you must have tact with certain people for the ignorance and misconceptions that go along with witchcraft...Witchcraft is a practice of many different forms of magick...Then there is religions, which is an entirely different subject altogether.....Witches are said to believe in Satan and worship him...That is just rubbish! I do not, as do all Wiccans believe in Satan....Hope that answers your question, my friend...

First I check for matches and kindling; not as much on a joke as you would like to think as there are some scarry people where I live; then I decide, after some time, whether each person or group can handle the info. Actually, just being myself lets a person know if they choose to see, but many safely put me in the catagory of "one of those Ren Faire people" or an old hippy. Actively hiding bothers me, but I won't shove myself down someone's throat or frighten them.
Was that a confusing enough answer? Not an easy question. ;)

It depends. Personally, I only tell people who need to know what I am. Mostly this is because my religion is between me and the deity(ies) of my choice and not anyone elses.
Also, I am secure enough in my own religion that I don't have to wave it as a flag or challenge to others. So, in certain ways I practice might seem like I am still in the closet (especially considering the actions of others) but that is out of choice and my own personal sense of reserve, not because I fear reprisals and/or intimidation.

No. I don't really see the point. I've seen red flags in their eyes in response to me just mentioning hatha yoga or Qigong. Fundies rule this town and they can have it. I'm moving back to Colorado soon. I'd like to have discussions about it sometimes and so I'll bring up other topics that are kind of related testing the waters, so to speak. I don't fear I'm in danger of being burned alive, but sometimes I wonder if maybe I should.

Ya, I would, in fact I do, with discretion of course. People can think like they want, if they don't like me because of them, then whatever. I don't worry bout what others think, I am me, thats all I can be. I have also found the people ive told, some are wiccan themselves so I can communicate with them on a different level. When your a catholic and you talk to people its not as connecting as when you are wiccan and you meet another.

Yeah right--not unless I wanted to receive a 'damnin' that day..
You see the thing that are said aboout Atheists
They eat children
They worship Satan
They're suicidal.
I know people who have extreme reservations about Atheists.
What do you think would happen if I told them I practiced withcraft? There are many people who associate that with demon worship. There aren't many who are keen on occult practiioners.
People are ridiculous... I'd keep it myself and share with people who have it within them to understand without judgement....

why do something that you are ashamed of if that is your religion then you should be proud of it. if your not proud of it then you need to find something else. if it were me seeing how the witch trials no longer exist i would let the world know. but thats not my cup of tea. but for people that are into that i say stand up for what you believe

One thing I've learnt about beliefs is that some people will accept them and others won't. I try to be honest with others about my spiritual practices, but then also consider this: A wise person throws not their seeds amongst thorns.
