Most things that are worth doing are not done all at once but in small steps. They say to learn a new word--to truly make it your own--you have to use it twenty times. (After you've done that, you will not only know it, you will know how to use it and it will become part of your lingquistic repertoire.)
Small steps add up. A year's worth of words is 365--and it's not as if you are starting knowing zero words--you already know more words than you can count.
The more words you know, the better you will be able to express yourself.
The habit of learning is never wasted. You will probably develop a way of learning these words that will help you learn other things, and will keep your mind active and engaged. I almost envy you your resolution.

sorry to burst your bubbles, just by learning a new word each night IS NOT a big accomplishment, you must be able to;
1) used it correctly & at the right time
2) remember it (after 1 or 2 years)
that, is (only) an accompishment, learning a foriegn language & able to communicate effectively with the natives of that language IS a big accompishment

Think of it this way, doing it once is no big deal, doing it every night for a year, increases your vocabulary by 364 words. Most people only have a few thousand words in their working vocabulary so increasint that number by five or ten percent is an accomplishment.
