3 days of fever in a young infant = trip to the doctor to rule out ear infection.
Whether baby is suffering from tummy ache, headache, earache, or general aches and pains caused by a virus, the fever probably has him feeling pretty miserable in the first place.
You may be told he is only teething, or he may need some antibiotics to fight an infection. Either way, ask the doctor what is safe to give him for a tummy ache.
If you are breastfeeding, part of the answer to that question is to nurse for shorter periods of time (just a few min. per breast), more frequently than usual (maybe every 1- 1.5 hours). That way you don't overload his tummy with more milk than he can handle while it's feeling sensitive.
Formula fed babies should not be given formula if they are vomiting. Breastmilk is much more gentle and easily digested, while formula can upset the stomach further. Rehydration liquids are recommended, such as PediaLyte.
I hope some of this is helpful to you, and I hope your son is feeling better soon!

If he has had a fever for 3 days, you need to take him to the doctor. Fever is a symptom of an infection and calls for an antibiotic, and in a child this young, you don't want to take ANY chances by giving them something OTC without first checking with his pediatrician.
When my daughter was a baby, we had a couple of different "home" remedies that we would try for tummy aches. We would take a mint candy and dissolve about 1/4 to 1/2 of it in a cup of warm water, then put it in the babys bottle. If that didn't work, we would take FENNEL SEEDS ( found in the spice section of the supermarket) and boil 1/2 teaspoon in 1 cup of water, strain the seeds out, let cool, add a little honey or sugar to the mix, and put that in the baby bottle. They both worked, but the fennel seed mixture seemed to work best, and it would make her poo and/or pass gas, which always helped her tummy.....and she actually liked drinking it too:-)

If his fever is above 101 and doesn't respond for a full 4-6 hours with Tylenol or Advil or Motrin (of course the children's versions of these given with the correct dosage) then you must take him to the ER tonight. If the fever comes down and only creeps back up after the meds wear off AND to no higher than 101, just keep pushing fluids.
If it's the later situation (fever is low and goes away with fever reducer) and you're sure it's not anything else, then just mix 1/8 of a smalll spoon (just the tip of a spoon) of baking soda and a couple spoons of water and give it to him with a bottle, that will get rid of gas. If none of the serious things I described apply, he could be teething and that could be the source of his discomfort and fever.
FIRST check for his fever the way I explained and only use home treatment if his fever isn't high grade and it gets down and stays down for 4-6 hours, otherwise ER tonight.
If he has a stiff neck and/or he's inconsolable ER now.
Good luck. Sleep with him tonight and keep an eye on him.

I know a couple of tricks.... 1) lay the baby on its tummy across your lap, gently bounce the baby while rubbing it's back in a circular motion, this will help the baby relieve gas.
2) As silly as this one sounds, use your thumbs and rub the in steps of the baby's feet. in reflexology this relieves tummy aches.
Fever is a sign of something other than tummy trouble though, could be an ear ache, or any number of infections, so make sure and consult a doctor if you have not already!

Maybe he just wants to be walked around while he feels so sick. Have you tried the football hold? You grab baby's diaper and lay him on his tummy over your forearm, with his head near your elbow. For a 5 month-old, you might need two hands! I would use Tylenol and call for an appointment. That fever has been around a long time.

Not any herbal tea's. Your 5 month old might have an allergic reaction to it. best bet is garlic tea. You boil 2 heads of garlic and 1 clove in water and give it to the baby at room temperature. I have 2 kids (1 is highly allergic to almost everything) and this is the safe alternative to tea.

He is probably teething. Slight fever and irritablity are normal. Try either gripe water, or a bottle of water with a little sugar in (pinch). I dont now the science behind it but it worked on my kids. Also try a cold teething ring
