Thanks for the laugh.
We would all hope that the psychiatrist could identify the insane person due to his/her years and years of training and practice.
But from the few psychiatrists, psychologists and counselors that I have met, I have to wonder if your question doesn't have a point.

The saying is an empty platitude dreamt up by some airhead. How would for example an everyday guy know anything about the mind of a serial killer or pathological liar. Psychiatrists study for long years to qualify.

Yes, it should. Knowing the ins and outs of a syndrom
certainly helps.
Wheter you were KILLER-PSYKO yourself
or just been through hard times,
You will know what the other has been through,
and you could help increase the problem or stop it. yes.
Then again,
A psychiatrist will have learnt only the "symptoms"
of known syndroms and learned "How to look out for them in order to diagnose" correctly.
Doesnt mean a Psych. was insane or cookoo his her-self....

I always wondered about this, having been to and over the edge, how in the world would they know what it's like, and how to treat it?
But you know they're not crazy, and the edge isn't a place I drag others to on purpose, so how would they know? Then again, if I can come back, probably some of these cooks went there and came back, too... Hate to think what it takes to get a degree in the matter lol.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
An example: I know what a Sherman tank is, but I am not one.
I know what a woman is, and I am one.
Good luck

that saying is not a TRUISM!
-- it's just a SNIPPY RETORT when you can't think of anything clever to say after being called something inflamatory or derogatory!

it is comparison, they don't say who is who,
since there is word sane,,,, in-sane means not sane,,, to consider oneself is sane, other that is not alike is insane
