Why is the variable "I" used to stand for current? Why is "p" used to stand for momentum?

I've heard that p for momentum comes from the latin impetus, the root of which is petere meaning to go.

I believe "I" for current refers to the "I"ntensity of electric current (intensity of the flow of electrons)
