I live in the city, and walk around alone all the time. As in any urban area, you just follow basic common-sense safety rules, and you'll be fine. Don't flash a lot of cash around. Stay in well-lit and well-trafficked areas. If you see someone who looks or feels threatening approaching you, casually cross the street or step into a shop or restaurant until they pass - just keep your distance without signalling any fear.

AJ is right about dangerous areas, but you can even get through the Tenderloin or the Mission ok if you just walk with a confident attitude and follow the guidelines above to keep your distance from troublemakers. She forgot to mention Hillsborough, though, and that's one extremely dangerous area that you should definitely just stay out of at all costs. That's where all the Republicans live.

No the stadium is not in Hunter's Point. The stadium is in a nice area. Just stay away from Bayview, Western Addition, Tenderloin and parts of the Mission. Best walk is from the Baseball Park all the way up the Embarcadero past Pier 39, past Fisherman's Wharf and up through the Presidio to the G G Bridge if it is a clear day.

I live in the downtown San Francisco, and I don't walk around alone all the time. So what i do is i call a taxi, i don't take the bus because its so dirty, you just follow basic common-sense safety rules, and you'll be fine. Don't flash a lot of cash around, just use a credit card that doesn't have a lot of money. Stay in well-lit and well-trafficked areas. If you see someone who looks or feels threatening approaching you, casually cross the street or step into a shop or restaurant until they pass - just keep your distance without signaling any fear.

Like in most other places, it depends a lot on on the area. I would not recommend walking around alone at night in the Mission or in Hunters Point, but other areas like West Portal and Forest Hill are pretty safe.

Most people who are unfamilair with SF would not feel comfortable walking alone in the Tenderloin or the Mission by themselves but both are actually pretty safe as long as you are aware of your surroundings. Hunters Point on the other hand should not be explored on your own, but then since there isn't much to see there you'd be unlikely to try.

The rest of the city is very safe as long as you are aware of your surroundings. Don't carry a lot of cash or expensive items on you, don't get drunk and wander around, in other words follow the safety rules for anyone wandering around on their own. If you are unsure of your surroundings take a cab.

While the city is small - only 49 square miles - like all cities there are places not to go during the night. For the most part however, with the exception of a few area's, the city is fine during the day.

As long as you are in the main city part, you should be fine.
We've vacationed there several times and had no problems walking all over the city.
