those people who disrespect people who are respectful are usually disrespectful to everybody. They either do not know how to be respectful or do not care to be respectful. It could be an attention-getter, they may not even know they are being disrespectful. I usually let them know politely their attitude sucks, and if they keep it up, I no longer associate with them. I cannot control other people, but I can control who I associate with.

I honestly think the disrespectful people want everyone to act as they do so they won't feel as guilty (although they'd never acknowledge it) about their behavior. So, when someone is polite, they try to do things to anger the polite people. Also, they could just be complete jerks.

A number of reasons. Often to make themselves feel superior. I know that at times when I have been, or at least was trying to be, respectful it was seen as sarcasm or I came across as trying to be better than the person I was with.

You can respectfully ask a stupid question, you can respectfully ask a RUDE, HATEFUL OR RACIST question. All of these may get you blasted, and if you are thin-skinned, you consider yourself "disrespected". Poor you, get over it, learn from what they have to say to you, the lesson the people who are blasting you may be of more importance than the question you asked.
