Wonderful country, wonderful people !
First visited 30 years ago, when the industrial boom was just getting under way. Everything was going like a steam train. Very exciting. Couldn't understand why, whenever I passed a bunch of schoolgirls in the street that they all started giggling ( behind the obligatory hand put over the mouth ) when they saw me. It was quite a bit later when a Korean girlfriend explained that to them the European nose looks enormous, and the bigger it is, the bigger certain other appendages might be.
Anyway, having travelled all over the south, from Seoul to the ancient capital Keong Ju, Ulsan ( Hyundai City ) and Pusan the industrial capital of the extreme south, and over to the beautiful Koje Island, the road to which is like a dream, I can say that South Korea is one of the world's best kept secrets.
At first Korean customs and especially the food can seem a little strange to western tastes, but they definitely grow on you, I still make 'kimchee', a kind of pickled cabbage, whenever I can get the spices.
I was once the 'victim' of the entire Korean National Dance team ( all girls ), trapped in the front of a Korean Airlines 747, on the way from Hong Kong to Seoul, I was pampered nearly to death, and was wishing that the flight would go on for ever !
One of my lifetime best friends is a Korean, and one of the most loyal of all. His character is by nmo means unusual for these remarkable people. Once work is done they can be the most fun to be around when relaxing, and not for nothing are they known as the 'Italians of the Orient'.
That's one British and totally outspoken view for you !
