I know one should not stereotype, but if you had to generalize what has been your take on it.
for example

"Individuality
Probably above everything else, Americans consider themselves individuals. There are strong family ties and strong loyalties to groups, but individuality and individual rights are most important. If this seems like a selfish attitude, it also leads Americans to an honest respect for other individuals and an insistence on human equality.

Related to this respect for individuality are American traits of independence and self-reliance. From an early age, children are taught to "stand on their own two feet," an idiom meaning to be independent. You may be surprised to learn that most U.S. students choose their own classes, select their own majors, follow their own careers, arrange their own marriages, and so on, instead of adhering to the wishes of their parents."

I wouldn't really like to judge them because well I've only met like 2 americans one is in my class and well he is a freak and he swears at the teacher and he hits them and stuff and 2 I went camping one time and it was a really long drive and when we got there we just wanted to park our trailer and go to bed but when we got there there was a car in our site and it turned out that some americans were visiting and came into the camp ground and used our site as a parking place and then went down to the beach for the day!! god it made me so mad, and if you are an american I bet your really nice and I bet most americans are really nice but I just had a bad experience thats all

American:

a) As per CNN, US Govt etc: 1 American Life = 100 other human lives.

b) As per other countries: dominatng, rich, caring and mean.

c) As per Americans: lost; and do not know wher there are heading.

Sounds like the description I heard in one of my intercultural communication classes. That's about right for what they called "US Americans."
