I made a mistake
I made a mistake in the past
That will always haunt me to the last
I let drugs and booze control my life
Which in the end took someone else’s life
Now here I sit a supposedly free man
But groups like MADD have another plan
After I done all my sentence
And made all my repentance
They don't want to see me succeed in life
So they plan to cause me nothing but strife
They petition the courts to change the laws
So that others like me are always at flaw
So here I sit in my house in the dark
Not even enough money to buy a spark
I can’t find any work without a license
And the bills are just a bothering nuisance
I tried my best to except these laws
But in the end I just stare at the walls
So here I sit with this bottle of pills
Wondering if they will cure all my ills
With no chance at living a normal life
I might as well end my miserable blight
Thanks to them I figured out a way
Of getting out of living another day

Thanks for the correction in spelling. It shows my education level isn't that high.
I'm not considering suicide either if thats what alot would think on here from this poem. But I can see where some would considering my circumstances today. I'm just tryng to point out what groups like MADD are doing to hold people convicted of my crime down in life. They say their supposrting todays society but are they really ? A convicted felon that is released back into todays society isn't getting any support at all. And with the laws setup so some can't ever drive again then what ? In my case I been clean and sober 18yrs and work here is limited and without transportation to commute almost impossible to find. If groups like MADD really want to support todays society why are they not trying to establish prohibition again and ban all alcohol sells instead of just targeting offenders that have been convicted ?

Ok since I heard from a MADD advocate on this one last statement before going to a vote. I never once said MADD ruined my life, I did that when I started drinking and doing drugs. Also I don't want to erase the past cause that is what keeps me where I am today and thats clean and sober. What I said was MADD trys keeping me held back from having a better life. Cause they have no concept of forgiveness which without that there is no happiness.
In my case it wasn't just a victim that died in my accident. It was one of my best friends and I beat myself up over it for a long time. It wasn't until I realized the good lord blessed me with a second chance in life that I was finally able to forgive myself and started moving on in a better direction. Now if God was willing to let me have this chance why is it some people feel they know better than him by saying I don't deserve a second chance to prove myself ? Hate me all you want but hate me for who I am today not who I was back then.

One of the other guys that answered said it is a Biographical poem, & he is so
right. What I want to say, as long as there is life there is hope. There's not one
person who hasn't made some kind of mistake. That doesn't mean you don't
deserve a chance. I believe that everyone deserves a chance. Did you learn
something from what happened? I believe you did. Then all is not lost. Just know that there are a lot of people rooting for you, even if you don't know who we are. That's what I love about answers--you can get answers, some really good ones and help that you need . Good luck and God bless you. X : }

that is deep. I hope you find the answers you seem to be wanting. I would suggest finding someone who will take you where you need to go. I also think that maybe you should try and publish your poem and you should write to some of the groups that you mentioned (like MADD) and write to them about how they are making your life harder. Maybe even bring up some of the lessons you've learned and maybe you can work with them. God Bless and what ever you do don't do the things you know is wrong even if it seems as if it will solve all of your problems.

Your poem is insightful and noteworthy. I am a member of MADD since my best friend lost her daughter because of a drunk driver fifteen years ago. I understand your strife in getting your life back together, but it pales in comparison to the life you stole. Driving isn’t a God given right, but a privilege. You lost that privilege as a direct result of your actions. Now, you have to make due without that privilege and you’d do anything to get it back and make the past go away. My best friend also has to make due without her daughter and would do anything to have her back and make the past fifteen years go away. MADD didn’t ruin your life and your future; you did that yourself. I enjoyed your poem and perhaps you do have a future as a writer, but I don’t share your conviction that MADD is being too hard on you. When you get depressed about your fate embrace the fact that you’re alive and try to do some good to buy back some of the bad karma you earned on that fatal day.
Best of luck,

From one person to another, you've already learned that pills aren't the answer. Why are you considering them again?
The poem aside, I think what you really need is support. Your family and friends and a good doctor (who is unwilling to medicate you) is the best way out of this.
It is a huge mistake and you seem regretful for it and for whatever reason, you are still being punished for it by advocacy groups and possibly the victims family.
You can not change their feelings about this, just like they can not change your feelings. See it from their point of view, turn the other cheek and keep turning the other cheek. In time, they will come to forgive because it takes too much energy to hate.
I think you need to take care of yourself. Love yourself and learn to love yourself. Your story may be told in time, but can not be fully encompassed by these verses. You first must overcome this self-destructiveness.
Faith is always a good guide. Providence will forgive you sooner than you forgive yourself. Take effort to recognize that when it happens.
Mahalo.

Good poetry.
Change the word except to accept to be grammatically correct.
Have faith, I too am a convicted felon. It took years but, I turned my life around after prison and ended up retiring from one of the world's biggest chemical companies. The one thing that helped me in finding work is that I was always up fornt about my conviction. I told the company I retired from the day I went to apply for the job. I told the human resources rep when I walke up to the desk, "I have a felony conviction from 19** for *******, if this is going to be a problem, I will not waste my time nor yours." They told me after I was hired that it was normally not their policy to hire felons, but, the fact that I was up-front and honest, along with my work record (never been in trouble on a job) made them take that chance on me.
Thank God they did.
Don't give up!!!!!!!!!

Wow - what can I say? You should write this into a story - write it in the first person - kind of like a journal. You have a powerful story to say. My prayers are with you. One day at a time. Pax - C.

True feelings are what is needed in poems. Also, organizations hinder more than they advance.
