Welcome to Chania!
There is no way you can be disrespectful to us because of what you wear.
This is a tourist destination, and we have literally seen everything!
I have memories of a blonde woman running along a beach screaming "DO ME! DO ME!"
She got a lot of volunteers. Right there, in public.
Last year I saw a woman wearing an extremely transparent white tunic thing, that was so sheer the pattern on her underwear was plainly visible. No bra.
Here, because people come from all over the world, its more about attitude than dress.
If you start acting high & mighty, you wont have a good time.
But since you even THOUGHT of asking, that means that you are a respectful young lady anyway, and you'll have a great time here!
A couple of tips:
1) Some peolple here are so uneducated, it's embarrasing. When they say something mind-numbling stupid, DON'T laugh in their face, it’s not their fault. This can be achieved by biting the insides of your cheeks.
2) When eating at someone’s house, enthuse about the food. This is not hard to do; the food is really good anyway.
3) Say things like "
"I WISH things were like this back home!"
" you are SO lucky living in a place like this!"
Etc...Etc...
4) At first, people might be a bit uptight. We have an inferiority complex. Our English sucks, and we know it, and so avoid using it when we think people are judging us for it. Don’t laugh at the accent, and don't get mad when someone is struggling to make them understood.
HAVE A GREAT TIME!

Women in Crete wear as much as what other women wear around the world.
Choose your clothes depending on the type of work you are going to do, but jeans and T-shirts are acceptable everywhere. Shorts and mini skirts are not considered provocative any longer, especially if wore by foreigners or young girls (and you are both).
However, if you are going to visit a church or an archaeological site, it's better to have a modest outfit. If not, no one will say a word, but you will be looked upon.
What you should be more worried about as a foreigner, is to protect your skin against the scorching sun, so don't forget to bring along sun lotion or day cream with high protective factor, sun glasses, hats with large brims and (last but not least) mosquito repelling lotions.
Hope you will enjoy your work in Crete and if you need further information or advice, do not hesitate to contact directly any of us, Greek answerers.
Good luck!

You can dress any way you would dress anywhere else. I mean normal clothes that you wear everywhere in the western world. As everywear, you realize that hot shorts and bikini tops are a bit provocative, but not insulting. Cretans will be insulted if their sister wears that, but if a foreigner wears them, they will just stare!! Anyway, the only place whee you are not allowed to wear open shoulders or shorts or pants sometimes is in church. Just dress normally and be yourself. And see as you go how you adjust. Young women in Greece in general wear normal clothes, nothing too provocative but nothing too conservative either.

Wearing some clothing would be a good idea if you do not want to attract a lot of attention. If you do then do wear something exotic like a sharong or a Haitian raffia skirt.
