when transmission gets hot, and i make a complete stop the transmission will not shift out. i have to tap on the brake pedal and it will jump back into gear. it shifts out fine until i stop again. could this be a sensor or is something internally wrong with the transmission?

I'm not sure about some of the terminology in your question, but it sounds to me like your torque converter clutch is not disengaging when you come to a stop. You will probably not be able to fix it youself unless you are a professional automotive technician.

I have bad news. The Taurus/Sable line was NOTORIOUS for transmission problems. You're going to have to take this one to a transmission shop. You're probabaly not going to like what they tell you.

how long has this been happening? if not to long you can try replace the transmission oil and filter that could stop this from happening if that don't help it might need to be replace the whole transmission.

What's wrong??? The fact that it is a F(ound) O(n) R(oad) D(ead)! Fords are about THE worst cars(?) on the road! Get rid of it! I know from experience! You're just going to be pouring good money into it! Get rid of it now! Don't spend another hard-earned dollar on it.
