I live in Michigan (Northern, not UP) and it is way too wet to plant but even more it is still too cold in the midwest to plant. Memorial day is the usual day that gardeners begin to plant because there is always danger of a late frost up until that time. I dont put out my plants until June. I do put out lettuce seeds, spinach, and sweet peas now because they like the cold and usually die off in the heat. I do not put out flowering plants until June.

To find out if your soil is right for planting, scoop some up in your hand and squeeze it. If it stays tightly together when you poke it (or if it feels ooky), it's too wet; if it just falls apart with no cohesion, it's too dry; if it forms a loose ball which comes apart in clumps, it's probably okay. Next question--is it warm enough yet?

Weather.com is showing overnight temps near freezing in the next ten days, I wouldn't start yet...
