My son (age 14) is in a public school in Virginia. He has told me several stories over the past three years about the school librarian and others talking about politics, specifically calling the President a liar as well as expressing their views to the class about the war in Iraq and such. Two years ago he went to the librarian for help in choosing a book for a report. She suggested "Sorry Everybody: An apology to the world for teh re-election of George W. Bush." He brought the book home and I looked through it and found that it was a a book full of photographs of people with home made signs of apology. How is he supposed to write a report on that. To top it off, the librarian was in the book! Today she told them that soldiers were only saying that Iraq was not as bad as it appears on the news is because they are forced to lie. She specifically referenced a soldier that had talked with teh students a few weeks ago adn basically called him a liar. What should I do?

I was limited in the space allwoed for my original question so i would like to clarify the question and position further. As for the political motives for my question, I do not care which viewpoint the school is teaching. If the librarian were pushing a right wing view I would have the same concerns as her statements are seen by most of the students as a part of their education and therefore must be the truth. This does, in a way, allow for my son and I to do some current event research and allow him to come up with his own opinion. In my opinon this would be allowing behavior for a political sciences teacher or the likes. The scenario I described was slated to be a talk about recycling though. If I was trying to make a political statement out of this situation I would not have asked a question on yahoo, I would have sent a letter to my local paper. I have drafted a letter to the principal of the school but am undecided in regard to speaking with the librarian first. She is aware alrea

already aware of my concerns from the incident with the book report. As I closed my letter to teh pricipal. I truly hope that the Soldier never learns of how his words were represented after he left the school.

first of all, the term 'brainwashing' would not save on with as 'brainwashing contains actual, emotional and psychological pressures that are actually not aside of any college, private or public. historic previous, on the grade and extreme college point is watered right down to that is fundamentals by way of fact there's no time to delve into particular circumstances. You supply a top level view and flow on. yet on occasion a subject remember will arise that calls for addressing. As a instructor i watch for those teachable moments. Why are hard artwork unions undesirable could be a question coming from a baby who's dad is an extreme precise wing ditto-head. The question then turns into, why are there hard artwork unions? What created the will? Are they the comparable now as contained in the 1930's or 40's or 50's? Why did they alter? who're the gamers? What are the themes? What characterize evaluations, and what are information? Shazam...an entire era is going by utilising, thinking is inspired, one question finally leads to a diverse and my suitable reams my anatomy for 'dropping type time' that meant to be dedicated to 'THE attempt'! Did George Bush suck? enable's examine out before, and then after? What have been the themes, who have been the gamers, what became the effect? what's the objective realty? the factor right that's that in the time of standard terms a moron would make the cost that faculties 'brainwash' everyone as communicate brings out greater questions than it solutions. that's what education is all approximately..asking questions, searching for solutions, seperating propaganda from actuality by utilising refering to the unique documentation, first individual bills and peer reviewed analysis. BS which you hear from the superb suited wing communicate radio dummies would not count selection! you may quote me!

Talk to the principal, if nothing happens then go to the school board. Just keep going a step higher until something is done!
It's sad that so many liberals are trying to indoctrinate people in what is suppose to be an unbiased learning environment!
I say liberals, because that is all you hear about in the education system trying to indoctrinate kids or college students. It's really sad when liberal teachers and professors give bad grades to conservative students based solely on their political views!

I say you should say to the principal that your son goes to school to learn Not to hear political debates from her librarian.
A Librarian's job is to help the kids to find books and keep the books organized, read to the kids what is appropriate for them Political stuff should stay out.
Don't be afraid to say anything...I will be very angry about it. Is teaching hate and bitterness to your child at such young age. He doesn't know better so I say she is harming your child mind in a way.

As with any similar situation, go to the source. Be an adult about it and contact the librarian and express your displeasure. If this has no effect, follow her chain of command to include principal, superintendent, as well as government officials.
That is what you should do.
If your question is just bait to receive political input (as I suspect), perhaps you should not be upset for her telling the truth. George W. Bush IS a liar! He has lied, obfuscated, and manipulated the truth at every opportunity to justify his actions. I would be upset if my children's teachers did not address current events.
As far as the statement about forcing soldiers to lie, that is untrue and she should apologize for that statement.
The book suggestion for the report was just a dereliction of her duties as a librarian in a public school and should be addressed with her supervisors.

This kind of CRAP really pisses me off!!! I have been in your situation more times than I can count. We have handled it several ways. In one case we removed our child from the class but obviously that doesn't apply here. In another case we talked to our child about what the adult was saying and helped her develop responses of her own opinions. But maybe the best course of action would be for you and/or your spouse talk face to face with this person and tell her you do NOT want her views pushed on your child and tell her if she doesn't stop you will complain to the administration and the school board. If she continues....do it!!!!! Going public (ie, a letter to the editor of your local paper) really scares the heck out of them. I've done that too, changes were made fast! Good luck and congrats on being a caring, involved parent.

Shoot her down like a dog! Imagine someone calling a politician a liar! She really should not press her own political views on impressionable minds. Isn't that what the 60's college professors did? My my won't we ever realize history repeats itself. Can you say Fall of the Roman Empire, kind of sounds like the Decline of Democracy.

Well that's what you get for letting your kid attend a government school. But seriously, your child is going to be exposed to people with different views all their lives. So they might as well learn to deal with it now. Learn to think for themselves and critically and not accept everything they hear.
I'd explain to my child that some people put their politics above what is best for the country. He needs to lean to distinguish the irrational rantings of lunatics from logical arguments based on facts. Government schools are the perfect place to illustrate the difference.

Contact the school board... it is not a librarian's job to express her political opinions on students... it is her job to guide the students as to which periodicals and literature that they need in order to fulfill their school assignments !!!

Speak with her. Bring to her attention your discomfort with what she is doing. Allow her time to correct her behavior. If she continues to 'press' her values onto others bring it to the attention of the faculty administration.
I voted for G.W.B.; though he seems to be failing now. He doesn't have the same drive he had before.

I agree, file a complaint with the school district. Try looking up their website or calling the superintendent's office. It's illegal to be instilling ideas in students (I know, I'm a high school student. We try to get the teachers in trouble as often as possible, so we know the rules)
