n + d = 33
5n + 10d = $2.35

therefore d = 33-n ,,,and we can substitue now that we know what the value of D is

5n + 10d = 235
5n + 10(33-n) = 235
5n + 330 - 10n = 235
330 - 5n = 235.........ADD 5N TO BOTH SIDES
330 = 235 + 5n.....substract 235 from both (without shouting)
330-235 = 235 - 235 + 5n
5n = 95...divide by 5
5n/5 = 95/5
n = 19 = number of nickles

back to original equation n + d = 33

19 + d = 33...subtract 19 from both sides
19 + d - 19 = 33 - 19
d = 14 = number of dimes

verify

19 nickles (.05) + 14 dimes (.10) ======
.95 + 1.40 = 2.35

on the MONEY ! we did it !

Let d = nickels
33-d = dimes
5d + (33-d) 10 = 235 (in cents)
330 - 5d = 235
d= 19 and there are 14 dimes

d + n = 33
.1d + .05n = 2.35

d = 33 - n

.1(33-n) + .05n = 2.35
3.3 - .1n + .05 = 2.35
-.05n = -.95
n = 19

d = 99 - 19 = 14

14 dimes and 19 nickels.

2.35=n*0.05 + d*0.10 eq (1)
33=n+d eq (2)

rearranging eq (2)
n=33-d eq (3)

substuting (3) into (1)
2.35=(33-d)*0.05 + d*0.10 eq (4)

solving (4) for d
2.35=33*0.05 - d*0.05 + d*0.10
2.35-33*0.05 = d*(0.10-0.05)
2.35-1.65 = d*0.05
0.70/0.05=d
14=d

substuting d into (2) and solving for n
33=n+14
33-14=n
19=n

check
19*0.05 + 14*0.10 = ?
0.95 + 1.40 = ?
2.35 = correct

I labeled the eqiations with eq (1), eq(2) ... far to the right, but the spaces aren't displayed correctly

.05x + .10(33-x) = 2.35

x = # nickles
33-x = # dimes

2007-03-28 22:16:17 · answer #7 · answered by Maverick 7 · 0 0

19 nickles
14 dimes

n=nickles
d=dimes

n+d=33
d=33-n

.05n + .1d = 2.35
d=23.5-.5n
33-n=23.5 - .5n
n=19

d=33-19
d=14

you solve it as a system of equations.

x being the number of nickels and y being the number of dimes

x+y=33
.05x + .10y=2.35

I would use substitution to solve.
