I went to our local area Veteran's home with our class to cheer them up, and is it normal for you to be sad when an old man with Alzheimers walks up to and hands you a banana and asks you to take care of it? because it made me sad even though it did not happen to me, but a friend of mine?

People with AD often mistake people and things for things in their past.
Maybe he was giving you a pet puppy in his own mind and felt very happy that your friend would look after the animal...I think anything a person does from the heart accomplishes the desired objective. He surely felt better after giving your friend the banana.
And it's normal to feel sad for a person in his shoes.
WTG for being compassionate.
Good luck

If he had Alzheimers then it's not that sad. You could have found humor in it and told him, "Sure. I'm going to take it home, give it a bath, and put it to bed." The really sad thing is when a person has a good mind and their body has failed. They know they are in the Veteran's Home and they know they are going to die. The Alzheimers patient doesn't know this. It is sadder for his family, than for him. Go back there to visit. You did something wonderful. You will never know who's life you touched by going there. Or who is waiting for you to return for a visit. You sound like a great kid.

Sadly, this is the result of aging. It is sad to know that our nations heros have aged to the point where they no longer know their families or friends. These men and women are put away in an institution and basically, forgotten.

Because of their sacrifices, we have the freedoms we have today.

I commend your class for visiting them. Even though some will not remember your visit, some will. They will remember that someone cared. Even the ones that have alzheimers were cheered for a moment because of the visit, so it is not wasted time.

Remember this day, and when you see a veteran, thank him. As a veteran of Vietnam, my heart is warmed every time I get a "thank you for serving". It makes it worth while.

As for your class, thank you for caring.

Shows you have Heart and the ability to have empathy for the plight of another human being.othing wrong or unmanly for you to feel sad for this old man for its human nature to feel to feel for others. Even if it wasn't you the old man walked up to but your friend who obviously told you-still OK and actually Healthy for he made you aware of the old man and his sad state of now being. Events, situations etc do not have to wittnesses first hand for humans to feel,to react to for where that the case the world would be in a sad shape with hardly any help being given to those in need or desparate plight. I have not seen any whales killed by Japanese or Norwegian Whalers but reading of the accounts By Greenpeace who are there attemting to protect and save the whales I get Angry that this barbaric practice is still occurring and Sad for Whales desparate in their sad plight-anger and sadness both are emotions felt by me but happened to others. Am Glad You Felt for the old man for it syas you are a Caring Individual-exactly what this world needs

it's great you went to cheer veterans up...they really need it, and deserve it...after going there, you are ok to be sad, but remember to good you have done....the brave men really like it
