It is a horrible and unforgivable act of betrayal.

it's wrong!...all you can do is try really, really hard to get it right the next time. i have an older sister named michelle. people that don't even know i have a sister, sometimes call me michelle. it REALLY ticks me off!!!! after i correct them (and i'm very nice about it), if it happens again, i call them the wrong name.
i also have a retail buisness...when customers come in, and i can't remember their name, i just explain that i'm sometimes goofy, and can't remember my own name, they give me a nice reminder, and i make it a point to remember the next time! if you are stuck in an embarrasing position, make up a silly story of twins you went to school with, or if you get the name really wrong, say something like, you look so much like my friend "monique", and i was thinking of how you could almost be her twin....and you are realllllly sorry for the mix up!
don't feel so bad! it happens! i'm not sure if it's ever "funny".
there was an episode of "raymond" when one of the twins called his teacher "mommy", and all of the kids made fun of him. ray asked "why, was she yelling?"...one of my boys sometimes calles me his teachers name, or his grandmother.
considering his teacher is a tall (6ft or more), slim (110 to 120 lbs), black lady, and my mother-in-law is an older (58) short (5'2"), plump (170 lbs), white lady...i'm some where in the middle (35, 5'8", over 100lbs)....and i'm mom!
we ALL make mistakes!

It could be worse believe me way worse! It is very likely she only heard the last part or may even get it often. Its not the worst time or place to utter the wrong name. In fact I have a strange name and if people say it right I nearly fall over.

Actually, this is quite offensive. It is saying to that person that they are so unimportant that you cannot bother to get their name right. It may also show your inattention to detail. It could say many things to many people, all of them bad. Also, there are cultures where mispronouncing a name or getting it wrong is an intentional insult and may get you in big trouble. This is a good thing to avoid so you don't look like you are insulting someone or look incompetent.

I try not to get anyone's name wrong.... Someone's name is the only thing that we truly have that makes us who were are to other people... People will say/know your name... even after your dead.

I'm good w faces, horrible with names. I never say a person's name when I first meet them. When I meet them again I say "I know someone with your name, How do you spell it?" They tell me again and it's all good.
Try it!

Your name, besides your looks, is the first thing that identifies you to people. Getting the name correct is a sign of respect.
I'm sure she didn't think it was funny.

Hmm...well it makes you sound forgetful for one. Although, when someone gets my name wrong I get angry, because they mix it up with this other girl who looks nothing like me (total opposite) just because our names start with the same letter. 0.o
No funny stories, sorry. =(
