Before the game, you simply ask your partner what convention(s) does he or she play. If more than one convention were going to be used, develop a mutually understandable (just between you two) body language to represent and signal the convention.
During the game, simply use the agreed body language to signal your convention.
After the game, review the bidding to correct mistakes made due to misunderstanding. Then refine your body language.

Or you could check out your local duplicate club and fill out a convention card so that you really knew what your partner was going to bid rather than playing charades with cards. Check out the link for more info. If you're playing online then you really have to wing it. Some partners will throw out bridge conventions they like and you can look them up online but it really is best to find a partner you know if you are just learning.

You won't until you either fill out a standard bridge "convention card" or take a minute or two to let "pard" know what you play. For example. what is your 1 NT opening? 15-17 hcps's or 16-18? Weak 2's with an artificial 2 Club opening or all strong 2's? Transfers over 1 NT or natural responses?
All you need to do is "ask?" what do you play?
Standard? Precision? Yellow card? Acol? Bridge World standard?

Hope this helps..

Before the game starts you are alloowed to ask if it is a new partner. We normally play with fixed partners.

You have to set up some signals with your partner....a raised eyebrow, a finger twitch, etc.
