I entered a smoking cessation program through my OB.
I actually just had one of my classes today.
There are 2 things that are safe to help you quit during pregnancy.
The patch IS one of them and the other is the anti depressant Wellbutrin. They are in fact both classified as safe to use while pregnant
Each cigarette you smoke contains 4000 chemicals. The patch contains 5 and Wellbutrin has none. Although wellbutrin is an anti depressant it targets the same area of the brain that gives people the cravings for cigarettes.
One thing that I found out is that when you smoke while pregnant, the tar from the cigarettes coats the placenta which is where any potential problems for the baby arises. This can be seen when you are in actual labor by the doctors.
Cigarettes are classified as THE number 1 addiction. People who don't smoke don't know how hard it is. And yes quitting cold turkey can also be harmful to the fetus. Getting in a program is so beneficial and in Indiana at least the program is completely free for pregnant women and their spouses. They provide the patch or wellbutrin for free to pregnant women and any other type of cessation for the spouse.
I am sure your OB would have any information on any similar programs in your area. It is well worth it.

Well, to be honest, I've never smoked but I would say you just gradually cut them out if you can. Probably the best advice would be for you to ask your doctor about the best way to quit so that it is least harmful to the baby.
My mom smoked when she was pregnant with all four of my siblings; I was the only one that she didn't smoke with. They all turned out fine and were actually normal weight and size. I however ended up being almost 10 pounds which was about 2 pounds heavier than everybody else. Now I'm not saying that you should smoke while you're pregnant to have smaller babies, I just thought I'd share that with you in case you don't find a way to quit because things can turn out ok depending on how much you smoke. Good luck!

Start cutting down. When u begin your day, put only 5 less cigs in the pack than when u would normally smoke.
Every 3rd day, decrease the amount by 2.
During the day, try popping a cinnamon tic tac in your mouth when u want a cig. The tic tac will give u the burn that a cig does. Keep them with u all the time. And replace a cig with one every chance u get, even if it just delays it by 30 minutes.
This is what i did when i quit.
I was lucky though, because after i started back and then found out i was pregnant, the cigs made me so sick i had quit within 2 days. But, some are not that lucky.
Good luck to u and get your mind on whats important. Its really hard to quit, but your baby needs all it can get.
Congrats on baby!!!!! :)

You are going to probably get a lot of negative answers to the question. But at least you are aware that it is bad. The best thing that you could do is cut back. How much do you smoke? The first day try cutting what you normally smoke in half and then each day after just keep cutting back. It can be really hard to quit but it is for the best. Even if it takes a week or two to quit at least you did it right?

One way is to ween yourself off of cigarettes. Try having only a few through out the day. Cut back on like 4 or 5 cigarettes a week. Don't try to cut back 5 cigarettes a day, the sudden lack of nicotin in your system can cause stress on the baby.
Another way is to try limiting your cigarettes to a certin number a day, then after a week, take 3 or 4 away, then do the same every week after. Eventually you will only need 2 cigarettes a day, then after that week just stop smoking them. It should work and there is no sudden lack of nicotin in your body so it wont put stress on you or the baby.
Another way is to just wait untill the craving passes. It usually only takes 3 mins. After that, if you still really need a cigarette, take a few pffs of one and then put it out.
Good Luck!!

First of all, congradulations on your pregnancy, and good for you for wanting to cut down or quit! Anything you do that can help you cut down will be excellent. I'm sure you already know the bad effects of it - who doesn't? So I won't get into that - but your public health department will have some great smoking cessation programs in your area that are usually free, especially to pregnant women. I work for the health department and they can be a great resource.

I stopped smoking 4months.. And I stopped smoking the day I found out i was pregnant.. I told myself over and over again, 'it's my babys life im hurting not mines' and i was a heavy smoker of weed and cigs... and I stopped all @ once like nothing. Just gotta have that strong mentality..And if you still can't stop LOOK @ A BUNCH OF BABY SONOGRAMS AND BABY DEFECTS it'll make you stop... And still can't do it... Just limit yourself 4 drags a day, and doint inhale so much.. I stopped for 31days STRAIGHT and I smoked 1 cig.. and im going on another 10 days freebie... :D

Did your doctor advise you not to quit cold turkey??
My mother smoked when she was pregnant with me and I was born with a malignant tumor which required surgery when I was 3 weeks old. I've had the scars ever since. I'm thinking if she had quit cold turkey the stress would have been easier to deal with than the surgery.

Cut down by one a day so that within the week you've quit. Replace it with some relaxing yoga or a walk with a friend.
