I live in Baton Rouge. My yard has sunlight all day. What is the best fertilizer to use before the grass is laid and how soon before should I lay it out? Also, after the grass is laid, should I fertilize again and how often?

No, do not fertilize before the sod is put down, most sod farms fertilize before the sod is cut.. Wait until the new sod is firmly "rooted" before fertilizing, then only lightly fertilize. Your supplier should be able to give you good instruction unless your buying from a home supply.

You should use starter fertilizer under the sod. Then you just need water. Starter fertilizer helps the roots take hold and develop.

If your yard has sunlight all day water it until you get arrested! hehe. Don't use any chemical fertilizer if you want a starter fertilizer simply use a light manure like sheep manure.

thats it.

I wouldn't fertilize at all until the roots take hold. Just keep it watered generously until then.
