There are two airports in melbourne - Tullamarine (melbourne) and Avalon.
They actually go to both airports, however, they now go to tullamarine more often (they used to only go to Avalon, now JETSTAR is the one that uses Avalon). It is highly unlikely that your plane will go to Avalon.
I live in Melbourne and travel frequently.
From tullamarine -
it will cost $40 by taxi to the city. By airport bus (Skybus) it is $15 one way or $24 return.
Skybus runs 24/7 every 15 minutes and is very easily found at the terminal. just look for the bright red booths.

i usually use Virgin Blue its cheaper than Quantas, the food is not that crash hot on any airline so its worth the cheaper fare. you will probably find that you will not be flying Quantas out of Brisbane any way they dont any more, it is Jet star i found out the hard way at Christmas time i decided to go Quatas for a change to Brisbane instead of Virgin as they had a cheap deal, if i had not have checked on line my booking i could have been stuck inBrisbane, when i phoned them and asked they told me they had known for nearly two weeks and not advised me, i had to cancel booking for my return to Perth via Melbourne and luckily managed to get a cheap return on Virgin at least virgin email straight away if any thing wrong with the booking i vowed never to fly again with Quantas after that, i either take food on Virgin or buy at the airport and just buy a coffee or such on the flight as for luggage it costs $8 for your case up to 29kls and you can take a small case trolley on board i always do

Tullamarine
You can get there by bus - I think it was about $25 one way. There are no trains or trams.
Taxi will cost about $40 to central Melb. The Train and tram services in Melb are excellent. Perhaps you could just get a taxi to the nearest station?

Virgin flies into Tullamarine airport.
You can catch a taxi to central Melb, will be approx $50.00 or a sky bus, which I think is about $15.00. Do a google search on sky bus.
Good luck....
