Very good - you are starting to think the right way. Right now he is two dimensional words on paper and you need to make him a well rounded living breathing person. You are thinking like an author! Congrats.

You begin with character studies and analysis. Keep notes - all adjectives that describe him - what he likes, what he dislikes, what he looks like, anything and everything you can think of about the character. You can even search through magazines, catalogs etc and find pics of people who resemble the person you see in your mind's eye. You should get to know your character so well that you can give yourself little "tests" to see if you know how your character would react in a situation. Is he right or left handed? Does he brush his teeth up and down or sideways? What would he do if someone approached him on the street and asked for money? What's his favorite TV show? Movie?

These questions dont necessarily come up in your plot, but they help you to be so familiar with your character that whatever does come up in your plot, you can easily handle.

From there, you have to work on your other characters and work out how they rub up against each other - interact etc.

Also research - very critical. If your character has anything that you need to research - an illness, a particular occupation etc - do the research - dont cheat your readers by glossing over it and faking it. I spend as much time researching as I do writing - probably more.

When you have all that done, start your outline and you will suddenly see that your character is much more manageable and much more interesting to you the author. That helps you write a more interesting character for your readers. Good luck. Just asking the question shows you are well on your way to understanding. Pax - C.

Have your friend pretend to be him. Ask him questions. Take him out to lunch. You'll know your character in no time.
