I couldnt help but notice that the main character in the movie "300" died similar to Jesus. His final position looked like Jesus on the cross. Further thinking, I noticed that the main character forgave his traitor before his death, died for his people, and the overall message was to remember what he died for. Could the director have done this on purpose? or am I over thinking the movie? is there anything else that you may have thought symbolized anything?

He did have some resemblance to Jesus, but you have to think of historical context too. Beards were common and the dress was accurate.

Although he died with his arms spread and although this could conjure images of Jesus it is a universal gesture of acceptance, knowing you did all you could. If what you've done is worthy and remembered and just maybe inspires others to rise to action then your life was not in vain.

When he says to his traitor or "Judas" " I hope you live for all eternity" (or something like that) he is not forgiving him, he is cursing him to eternal life with the guilt of betrayal. Quite the perfect irony if you ask me.

Other symbolism I noticed was the marks on the shields of the spartans. It is basically an upside down "V". In ancient times the "V" represented the feminine and the opposite the masculine, similar to yin and yang. That was a very nice touch.

Throughout the movie our "modern" ideas or masculine and feminine are challenged, from the authority of the queen and the regard she is held in by her king to the androgynous child we see as the sole survivor of the attack on a city to the not so many but courageous Athenians to the heavily adorned and make up wearing yet quite fearsome and powerful villain.

Frank Miller, the author of both 300 and Sin City is a serial novelist and knowing his work, any symbollism or images were absolutley intentional. I don't know who directed but Mr. Miller has a very heavy hand in the movies his novels become. If you leaf through the books and then watch the movies you will see the exact same images he drew on the screen.

Why the heck cant people simply enjoy ACTION/EPIC films for what they are????

I walked out of the theater after seeing 300, feeling like I had just come from a film with some awesome special effects and a decent plot...

....only to find the next day that people were tying political and religious themes and implications to it.

FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, PEOPLE!!!

Theorists need to get a life. I couldnt care less what characters or locations in the film symbolized what.

People are always looking to read too much CRAP into various publications like movies, literature, etc.

Look how they bashed Mel Gibson's Apocalypto...yet another film with great ACTION. They claimed it was degrading to the portrayal of the Mayas, etc.

GIVE ME A BREAK. They're just MOVIES!!! 2hrs worth of life to be soon forgotten.

I can see the parallels now that you have pointed them out. I think that it could have been intentional and that the director is probably the one who designed it that way. Even though this was based on a factual event, the records could not be detailed enough to have recorded small details like that.

Funny about the forgiveness thing though... I interpreted it totally opposite. I took him saying he hoped that he lived a long life as a kind of wish for punishment, since his deformities and guilty conscience would have made a long life unpleasant (from my view anyway).

Good observations though!

300 is based on history BEFORE Jesus was even born.
You are over thinking it . . .
