If we do not learn the mistakes of the past we will be doomed to repeat them in the future.

I do believe in the idea that we need to know the past so we don't make the same mistakes...but if you really look at history...we have already screwed that one up. The same mistakes have been made time and time again...and it will keep happening far into the future. Yes, we can learn from other people's mistakes...but sometimes things have to be lived to be understood.

I'm going to school to be an archaeologist and historian...and all my friends always ask me what my fascination with the past is...I love the past and history almost more than anything else (which is why I'm doing what I'm doing)....and I always give the same answer to that question.

The future and living ahead is nothing but the same thing repeated over and over again. If you look into the past, and can understand how we have become who we are today, and who we were in the past, we just might know where we're going.

And some people are happy with that answer...and some can't quite understand...but there is nothing more to elaborate on.

You must use the past as an example to get were you want in the future. Learn from old mistakes so you dont have that problem yourself. To know the past, is to know the future.

to not make the same mistakes in the future. Most people learn from the past and try not to repeat it and when we look back on the past whether it be 200 years ago or yesterday we are learning from it.

oh wow, do you know how important history is? i don't like studying history, but its incredibly important. most often people will say that its so we dint make the same mistakes as we do. this is parctically correct. however, there is amazing power in knowning the past. you could rule the world if you know how to analyze the past correctly.

also furyofthe.... does offer good grounds for we should look into the future. however fury, you are correct, but you are forgeting the only way to be successful in the future is if we know the mistakes we made.

Those who do not study history tend to fall under the illusion that their time is unique and their problems like no other problems before and that the present is the only thing that matters.
Looking into the lives of men in the past, one comes to realize that most dilemmas facing us today have faced men of the past. It gives us a better perspective on our ethics, our sense of our value and liberates us from the prejudices of our own culture (up to a point). It makes one wiser and more difficult to sway by those who would manipulate the public's opinion for petty reasons. And we also get more perspective on things, coming to the realization that "This too shall pass."
Also, we can acquire a sense of responsibility for those who follow us. Just as our world was built by men of the past, we are building the world of the men of the future. We have a duty to the unborn as well that they may look back and learn from us.

In the past we store our knowledge and in the future the beliefs.
We change our beliefs into fact by the knowledge of past.
Our past acts as beam light to clear the way that leads to our future.

So you can learn from it. Not only is it good to know how ways of life, ideas, and people have changed over time....but it's also intended to keep the bad things from repeating themselves.

we have to know the past to vividly understand who we are today, where we are, and why things in the present are happening. basically, the decisions of yesterday is the reason why we are who we are today and the decisions of today will be who we are tomorrow.
