This is a specific question re wifi piggybacking, if someone was on my wifi connection and was downloading porn etc would that trace back to my ISP and would the authorities be able to tag that to someone else or pin that on me?? (I have my system passworded etc but a lot of people don't)

It's tough to tell what the authorities would do.

If someone were using your wifi to download illegal material (child porn) it would make life difficult for you. The traffic would associate back to your IP address and the law would be likely be taking your computers to perform analysis on the drives to determine if it was downloaded with your computer. They would likely have your computer in evidence for a 3 - 6 month period depending upon how busy the forensic group is.

Best to just nip the open wifi and make it so only you can use it.
