Maybe its just me, but shouldn't you be going for an agent before an editor? I've never heard of anyone hiring an editor before getting to the publishing stage. It sounds like not so much an editor, but just a proofreader. And why spend your money on that? Trust in yourself and your talent. Go for an agent now. Editing and perfecting will come later with an editor at a publishing house. Fine tuning now should be done by you. If an agent or editor can't see talent/potential in what YOU write, a 'pre-editor' won't help you at all.

You didn't hire an editor, you hired a book doctor. A book doctor helps you clean up your manuscript before submitting it. Unless your word processor spell check doesn't work and you've forgotten basic grammar, it's not fiscally wise to hire a book doctor.
But what's done is done; that money's gone. From now on, spend your resources - energy and money - on postage and researching the best agents to query for representation. Persiphone's link is a great start. Also, pick up a current copy of Writer's Market and refer to the agent section.
Good luck.

Usually editors provide contracts. They charge a set fee per page. What else do you need? What are her qualifications to edit? A lot of people have BA and MA in English and arent qualified editors. Where did you find this person? There are websites with lists of editors. Pax - C.
This page should help you.

I would suggest that you ask a few people that you trust and that enjoy reading the genre you wrote to read your book and give feedback. If the book is intended for casual readers then their opinion can be just as useful as a professional reader.
