Depends on the person who started the rumor. For some, any kind of motivation could do, for others it is for some kind of personal gain.

Some people start rumors because they feel like they have to bring someone else down in order to feel good about themselves. People who start rumors probably have low self-esteem and need something to compensate for it so they try to degrade other people in hopes that that person's self-esteem would drop as well. You know what they say, "Misery loves company."

Because some people like drama and the excitement it brings. Plus some generally don't know the truth themselves they lie so much.

to divert attention away from themselves. they believe that if their peers are too busy fighting each other, they will not notice their OWN shortcomings.
