According to FBIjobs.com, which claims to be an "official site of the U.S.Federal Government," FBI Agent trainees base salary is as GS-10's (Federal pay grade 10) or $43,441/yr plus a 17.5% "locality adjustment" for Quantico, for a total of $51,043. That may or may not be up to date.

After graduation, newly assigned Special Agents are paid as GS-10's with appropriate "locality adjustment" depending on the location of their assignment. Locality adjustments range from 12.5% to 28.7% of base salary depending upon office assignment and is an addition to the base salary.

According to the Office of Personnel Management, federal pay grades have several steps, depending on time in grade and other criteria. Grade 10 starts at $47,755 for Step 1 to $62,068 for Step 10. Those rates are effective January 1, 2005. They may still be in effect.

Of course, there is also Grade 11 and on up, each with 10 steps, until you get to the unpublished pay grades. I have no idea what happens with the unpublished ones.

As you progress through your career, you should increase in Pay Grade and in Steps. The top published grade is GS 15 which tops out in Step 10 at $135,136 PLUS the locality adjustment.
