'Lithium' is formed from the modern Latin 'lithia', a term for lithium oxide. 'Lithia', however, is an alteration of the earlier Greek 'lithion', the neuter of 'litheios', from 'lithos', meaning stone.

It is not a Latin root, it comes from the Greek word lithos, which means rock or stone.
