When I was in college, I had a professor lecture on how to write a good essay. He said:

In the introduction, tell people what you're going to say.
In the body, say it.
In the conclusion, tell people what you just said.

As far as an opening line, it really depends on the topic. You could lead off with an interesting/surprising/shocking statistic that really draws the reader in.

Maybe you're writing about a person or event? Maybe you could lead off with a misconception. Tell people what they think they know about a topic and tell them their wrong.

Many people start their introduction in an essay with something interesting, something that will hook the reader right away, such as a quote. Then u would explain the relation of the quote to your essay and give any background information (if ur writing this essay based on a piece of literature). Lastly, you would give your thesis statement.

The conclusion should restate the thesis, summarize the main points of the essay's body paragraphs, then end by referring back to your "hook."

Hope this helps!
