Its a common part because its the first time many of them are interacting with others. As a child you don't see things from others perspectives. That's a reason why little kids are bad at sharing. They only tend to think about themselves as they are too small to understand the concept of others wanting the same things. Biologically they are selfish at this stage. Its not entirely their fault though. Many children need to be catered too because they are children and are not at the stage where they can do things for themselves. They get accustomed to having things done or handed to them. So they don't get why they can't play with that shiny knife on the kitchen table when they reach out to it. Its not until they get older where they can start understanding things more is when conflict lessens.

bacause they are finally leaving the home and interacting with different viewpoints for the first time ... in the early years of a child life the family essentially has a total monopoly of the childs development process, when they enter educational institutions thats the first time they see other viewpoints ...

They have probably never been around a certain number of kids in their young life.
or the could possibly be used to being alone and they don't know how to react when there are more children around.

just look at animals when they are young, its a time to see who is alpha male and who will be omega male, or female. i grew up in a small town and most of the wise guys i grew up with are pretty much alphas and most of the omegas are omegas.
