Hmmm, when I had my Celica which was a manual, seems when I started having problems shifting was the tranny telling me, it was time for another clutch. But hard to say if you had auto or manual. I had the same problem on the manual. hahaha

Just like when you hit the brakes and hear a crunching sound and the brakes get lower and lower.

When the clutch does go out you will be driving and then no power. You will not be able to shift in any gear. When was the last time you change the clutch. If more than 2 years then due another one.

Here is URL for the recalls, you did not state the type , as there are two types, but you can look real quick, just in case you have changed your clutch recently. And good to look at anyway.

i own a repair shop, and try putting a new detente cable on it ,when these get stretched out they cause them to not want to shift good, they only cost about 20 bucks at any advance auto parts store and usually this will fix them,if this doesn't do it you may have to have this one looked at by a good transmission mechanic, they might be able to help better with it,but i always seem to be able to get them right again after changing the fluid and filter and adding a new detente cable, good luck hope this helps.
