i know you can do it in basketball, but in soccer would that be an obstruction

It's obstruction if you're just standing in the way of an offending. Someone blocked me by standing in front of me during a game, and obstruction was called. You can get away with it if you're shielding the ball (that's when you have the ball in front of you and you're basically putting up a shield to prevent others from getting the ball.) That's not obstruction, because you're protecting the ball from the other team's possession. But you don't have to have your foot on the ball, but it still needs to be close in front of you.

no, so long as you dont make physical contact with the opposing player, you are fine. obstruction is almost never called. only the strictest referees would call obstruction if you stood in the way of someone. btw, i'm an avid soccer fan, player, and referee.

I play premier southern region 3 and many people shield the ball from players. You could set a screen but not many people do. Just make sure that the ref is leniant with fouls.

You can do it but you have to be in contact with the ball. For example you can not sit the ball infront of you and block it from other people. Make sure your foot is on it.
