I'm interested in building a deck off of my kitchen and the city of Malden (state of MA) said that the "setback area" is 20 (I assume feet) from the rear and 10 from the side. Does this mean that my deck can't begin for 10' from my side property line?

Thanks!

The setbacks are in place to prevent permanent structures from being built within a certain distance from the property lines. Having said that, you may be able to build a deck since it is a low structure and would not visually impact the neighbours. I am assuming it would be at the ground floor level. Ask the local building department if the setback provisions apply to decks.

You got it. It sets the distance from a property line to which you or next door can build to
