Media Player lets you do that. When you're burning it, somewhere (if you fish around) theres an options tab that lets you pick the speed of writing and so on. There will also be a link on that same menu to pick between regular and mp3 format. At least it's in Windows Media Player 10, that's what I have. I can't speak for earlier versions.

If you are talking about converting songs from a CD to an MP3....

Here's a free program that will copy songs from your CD and put them on your computer as an MP3.

with media player 11, go under burning options and at the bottom select convert to. I had the same question the other day and the only thing i found to work was mp11. And it was good quality too.

Download Itunes. Take a normal cd and put it in your drive and have itunes convert it. Once the files have been converted and are in the itunes library burn whatever you want from itunes onto your cdr.

hi don! i would go with itunes. it's a great application and totally free with no annoying "upgrade to pro" messages, no danger of adware/spyware, and no unstable code that crashes ur computer. plus there's lots of cool FREE content in the itunes store in the "podcasts" section - everything from band/music podcasts to news, sports, tech shows, even cooking-comedy!

once u download and install itunes... http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

u will want to set up the import and burning preferences:

1. start itunes
2. click the "edit" menu, then click "preferences"
3. click the "advanced", then click the "importing" tab - change the "import using" option to "mp3 encoder"
4. click the "burning" tab and choose the appropriate "audio cd" or "mp3 cd" option that suits your needs.
5. now start inserting cds into ur computer and importing into itunes
6. once u get some music imported into itunes, create a playlist (click the 'plus sign' button on the bottom left corner of itunes) then drag the songs u want to burn to cd into that playlist.
7. now insert a blank cd into ur computer and then right-click the playlist u created in step #6 above and choose burn playlist to cd

once ur jammin' to ur cd of mp3's, please subscribe to my FREE video podcast on iTunes: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=183309259
