Cause: Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austrian throne is assassinated by the Serbian militant group the "Black Hand"
Effect: Austria hands Serbia an ultimatum demanding various concessions. The Serbian leadership is ready to accept most of the clauses but refuses the one about their sovereignity as a state. This of course is the pretext for Austria declearing war against Serbia.
Cause: The allience system
Effect: With the decleration of war by Austria, Russia an ally of the Serbians declears war on Austria. Germany an ally of Austria declears war on Russia and France an ally of Russia declears war against Germany. Britian later declears war after the Germanys advance through neutral Belgium (following the route of the Schileffen Plan). Seeing an opportunity to strike back at Russia the Central Powers are joined by Ottoman Turkey later in the war.
