For the same reason you have launched the smear campaign on Conservatives (the Pres, the media, Rush, now O'Reilly).
He doesn't like them.
Smearing CAN be lying, but it doesn't have to be lying. Smearing can be taking the truth and beating people over the head with it. Or sometimes taking bits and pieces of truth and twisting them all up into something nobody recognizes. Which tactics do you use?
