I would say b because they are giving way to some understanding so that when the kid grows up he won't penalize everyone harshly. It's kinda like when a killer is in the house, does the kid kill him, or does he let the killer get him first? And no he can't just run away, the killer has backup outside. Sorry for the graphic images in your mind, but it's just an example.
