The fact that your vehicle will blow cold air for a few minutes shows that there is refrigerant in the system, and the need for a recharge is very unlikely, although it could be low. One likely cause is that the evaporator is freezing up, which will not allow any air to pass throught it, and it will not remove any hot air from the incoming stream. This will typically result from a faulty expansion valve that lets too much refrigerant through the opening. Another possible cause is an intermittent pressure switch, which may say there is no pressure, intermittently, or when it reaches a certain temperature, and this causes the A/C compressor to turn off. The compressor or clutch assembly may also be failing after being warmed up. Again, these are the most likely possibilities, in descending order, but I cannot say for sure. I recommend taking the car to an ASE Blue Seal rated facility, which you can find on ASE.com. This elite certification belongs to only 3-4% of the shops in the nation! Anyone who works on your A/C system is required, by federal law, to be EPA Section 609 certified, either by the EPA, Mobile Air Conditioning Society, or the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.

Check under the hood when you first turn it on and look at the clutch on the front of the compressor and make sure it is turning. The pully will always turn with the fan belt but the center section of that pully should be turning as well if the compressor is running. Watch this untill you are not getting cool air out the vents and then check it again after wards. If the clutch runs when cool air is comming out and is not running when air starts getting warm then normaly you are low on freon. There is a pressure switch that will stop the compressor when compressor has too low of suction pressure to proted the compressor from damage. I you have low pressure then you have a leak in your system and I would recomend finding the leak and repairing it prior to adding freon since it will just leak back out. Unless you are knowledgable about doing this I would recomend having it done because when you repair a leak you will need to remove the freon first repair the leak, pull a vaccume on the system to remove non condensables and moisture and the recharge it so go on your ability to perform these task when making your decision.
Too much feron will cause it not to cool but the compressor will continue to run if that is the case because the pressure switch is satisfied and doesnt come in to play if that is the issue but usually that is not an issue providing you haven had freon added in the past.........If you add freon keep your low side pressure between 30 and 35 psi with compressor running.......................................hope it helps

I'm not a very good Mechanic but It's most likely one of two things...your compressor clutch or lessor of the two, low on coolant. ever since they stopped selling R-12 because of the problems with the ozone (so they say) the stuff we're using today doesn't get as cool but I'm willing to bet a beer it's your clutch. Good luck and hope this helps :)

i own a repair shop ,and usually when they do this there just getting low on freon, either that or the compressor is going out on it,they too will cause this same thing to happen also, you might want to take it and have it checked ,before it goes all the way out,if its just freon they can add back to it and get it to work right again, good luck i hope this helps.

you don't need Freon check and see if you have dirt or grass or some thing clogging the air flow though the a/c condenser if you have no air flow the a/c will not work or your low presser switch or hi presser switch is bad

you need refrigerant a/c charge you can get it at advance auto parts or wal mart but you need to find out if you have r-20 or r-234 in it the web should tell you if you have r-20 you have to take it to a auto shop and tell them to vacum out the old stuff then buy a converter kit at wal mart or auto part store all together no more than 100 dollars for the mechanic and everything

Freon actually isn't sold anymore, go to your auto part store and you'll see a can that you attach to the A.C. Box, it will then refuel per say the coolant and you'll be freezing after that, if that isn't it, it could be the motor.

Your a/c is either low on freon or the compressor is going bad.
