It's not that simple. Unless you want to be driving down the road with a sail, wind power won't help you with transportation. We do use wind power to generate electricity in many locations, but we can't cover the landscape with windmills. They have the nasty habit of being loud and the birds get shredded as they fly through the area.

Modern wind power is great, and we should be looking at it even if fossil fuels are still available. Everybody is talking about Hydrogen power, but noone says how it requires large amounts of electricity to generate hydrogen. How do we generate electricity, we burn fossil fuels like coal. Wind power would provide the electricity needed to generate hydrogen. I have also seen studies that said if we were to cover 10% of Nevada with windmills we could genereate more than enough power for the entire country, and the same went for solar power. Everybody talks down on windmills because they are supposedly noisy and kill birds. Most plans for siting windmills place them offshore where you wont' hear them. The only negative effect they would have is they would ruin the view from the oceanside mansions of New England. As far as having an adverse effect on the wind patterns, they do not block as much wind as a house. Wind mills might not be the ultimate answer, but so far the only thing that seems to be stopping them is the fact that rich people are more concerned with their ocean view mansions than finding a realistic and positive solution to the energy crisis we face.

Wind power is rather unreliable and could potentially disrupt migratory bird routes, especially if deployed on a large scale. We have an abundant source of water which can easily have the hydrogen coaxed from it. In absence of electricity, there are also chemical processes that can be used to extract hydrogen. Hydrogen can be stored in metal hydrides for future use, much like a propane or gas tank. Combined with solar power, we'd have a very compelling solution for cooking, fueling cars, heating homes, etc.

wind power might not be the soluation. if we all stopped using fossil fuels and just used wind power to power everything we would not a lot of windmills. these windmills actually slow the wind down. how might this affect the earth's climate? i don't know. my point is that wind power might not be all its cracked up to be.

Why wait? For the sake of future generations, why don't we switch now?
