Soul and spirit are one. It is the soul (spirit) within every living being that manifests a body... the flesh. There is nothing like flesh has died. When a soul atman spirit leaves the body... the body just becomes dead (inert matter)... of no further significance!
After the death of the body... the soul atman becomes free to manifest another body. If matching parents are available it immediately manifests that body, else in the interim period it remains in heaven or hell depending upon the residual balance of karma. A positive balance of karma gives heaven and a negative balance of karma hell!
Ever since the soul atman separated from its source after the big bang... it got mired in impurities. And for removing these impurities (the dross contained within)... the soul atman manifests one body after another (a chain of 8.4 million manifestations... an earthly journey of 96.4 million years). Not certain why you place paganism in there, however I'll reply anyhow. I have no idea of any pagan faith that has a resurrection subject very similar to Christianity or Judaism. (I'm now not acquainted in any respect with Islam's tackle it.) The so much ordinary ideals in paganism are in reincarnation or in a few go back to Universal Consciousness (for loss of a higher generalization) or a few style of Paradise. I have no idea of any that experience a perception in a go back of a soul right into a frame in this or another planet that could be the equal as a previous incarnation. Return as a child with a clean slate, sure, achieve an extra frame with the certain equal concentration - no. Also in paganism we have now the perfect accountability for our movements and we can definitely face the penalties, however no cleaning by means of another company can take that away. Our deities do not pass judgement on us as "evil" considering we don't seem to be, nor can ever *be* excellent. One "sin" isn't identical to each different and considering the fact that perfection isn't an inconceivable common we're set towards, the judgment we obtain is centered totally upon our movements and intentions. No quantity of praying to our deities gets us out of the sizzling water we create for ourselves and they do not call for an blameless sacrifice to make up for it. The best cleaning that issues is what we do for ourselves - and that's sufficient.

WHAT IS MAN?
(1Cr 2:11) For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man, which is in him? Even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
(Ecc 9:5) For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing,(Know Nothing) neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.
When you’re dead you know nothing.
The Spirit of Man is retrieved and shelved until Judgment.
There are two parts to man God Created.
1. This sole or Nafesh (Hebrew) meaning breathing, living, sole or Body, Flesh. A shell. The Flesh must be feed, nurshied and stroked in order to servive.
2. Spirit of man, which is what makes or separates us above or from the animals. Within. The Spirit of man only wants what it desires in lustful helpings all the time. The Spirit of man is sort of a Flight recorder a little black Box which records everthing in one's life. Reportable to God on Judgment Day.
Now if the Spirit of man accepts the Holy Spirit from God then the Holy Spirit replaces the Spirit of man, ( It dies) and becomes a New Being. A Child of God. If fully allowed to mature as Jesus was then Jusdgment will not come to a Child of God. But Weight of responcibility will be judged.

Either way, the soul or spirit is energy and or other stuff that hasn't been discovered. Matter and Energy are kind of the same thing in a way, however flesh does die. What comes after, I believe that is up to you.

Spirit , soul and even ghost are the same , after the body is dead yes all the memories the brain sells held they died , but you see the spirit/soul/ghost is our essence of all we have accumulated trough our different life times , it is a compilation of character of hopes wishes ,loves , pains ,happiness ,memories of experiences , all of this survives past the body death , there is plenty of proofs through out the world of locked spirits in the so called haunted houses ... there is numerous cases of the reviving from after death and recalling the visual and heard conversations of people around them , there are all the people with unexplainable gifts of art or music , all of this is recollections of previous life's in a new body .

God"s Word {Sword (Ephesians 6:17)} can divide soul and spirit (Hebrews 4:12). Trusting CHRIST + His BLOOD = saved to go to heaven! At death, soul and spirit (both immaterial) depart (are absent from the body {material goes to dust}), and "are present with The LORD!!" (2 Corinthians 5:8) Most of the saved have "a desire to depart, and to be with CHRIST {our Precious SAVIOUR}; which is far better!!!" (Philippians 1:23)

They say silence is the only voice of Higher power. He his movement is divine inspiration but his voice is silence. You should have a nice chat with higher power and speak to him in his language for a while. The answers will come to you then.
