Speaking from the perspective of one who has studied, taught and directed both, I would have to say that the violin is harder to learn to play well and to become accomplished at. With wind instrument fingering systems, when you put the correct fingers down you are going to be pretty close to the correct note (you still have to use your ears to tune correctly). Hand position and finger placement is much more critical for the string player and then you add the problem of the ever changing condition of the strings themselves.

The learning curve on the strings just seems to be longer.

As a violinist, I would say the violin. It is one of the hardest instruments to play because being in tune is a very precise matter, less than a millimeter of finger distance can put you out of tune. Also, using the bow is very difficult to do properly, many violinists get stuck doing some kind of incorrect bowing and doing the correct bowing is then much harder to fix.

There are a lot of nice things about violin that take a long time to learn: vibrato, higher positions, and certain bowings (like spicatto) come to mind. However, the violin is very satisfying once you learn it, it is easy to be very expressive with it once you get the technique down.

I don't know much about flute but my sister played it and I tried playing it a little bit, it definitely seemed simpler to play on an overall technique level, but I never got anywhere with it, nor really wanted to.

I think the violin is harder to play because there are only 4 strings and a variety of different positions you must remember, while on the flute, you use 9 of your fingers, keeping each fingering distinct. The embouchure on the flute can be tricky, but once you get the hang of it you will never un-learn it.

Flute. I've studied violin, piano, pipe organ. I've tried flute but have not studied it. I still say flute is harder than violin!

The flute is harder to play because there is more fingerings and you have to really concentrate on how hard you blow your air and how fast you blow it and you have to learn how to move your stomache muscles at the right time. The violin is really easy to play b/c I play it and all you have to do is learn the fingerings

definitely flute. it's really difficult. you kinda have to learn how to breathe in at the same time you are breathing out so you can make a constant sound. if you ever here an instrument out of tune in a band, it is more than likely the flute.

I'm going to guess the flute. I always wanted to play one, but never learned. Could be the fiddle though. None of those instruments is too durn easy. I've taken Guiter lessons and still feel like a total loser trying to play.
