Why so popular? Because of the surrounding atmosphere:
1. Noisy conversations
2. Background music/TV blaring
3. Shouts of orders from customers (ah so!)
4. Cultery clanging
5. The sound of footwear ...flip-flop, flip-flop, flip-flop
6. Robust cooking style - you can see them cooking
7. Wide choice of cheap food
8. The smell of food cooking, ..(breathe in)... ahhhhhh..
Now I'm hungry!
P.S. I've never been to Singapore, but I can imagine what it's like. Hawker stalls are the same everywhere you go.

Hawker centres are normally build within the housing estate. It's the place where Singaporean have their daily meal, it's become part of their life. And of course, most important, the foods are cheap and with many variety.

Because they are hawker centres not restaurants. That's shows that many can only eat at the hawker centres because they cannot afford to eat daily at the restaurants.

It's not expensive, and suits the local taste buds! Singapore is also know as the Food Paradise, and they don't mean the restaurants(:

first n foremost...it really cheap n affordable.. n normally hawkers r located at a stragetic location like in the hdb central whereby is accessible by mrt n lots of buses. there r lots of varieties such as roast duck or chicken rice, malay cuisine (mee rebus, mee soto, nasi padang, etc),fried carrot cake, double boiled soup, japanese food, laksa, yong tau fu, fried kuay tiaw, satay, porridge stall, wanton/fishball noodle, dessert stalls, dimsum, fried oyster, seafood, prawn noodles, western food,etc...
it tasted gd as well... esp those awarded by makansutra or yummy king(channel U programme). only setback is tat..it can b reli warm at times esp in the afternoon and sometimes it can b unhygenic.
